Rahul targets Mulayam's 'secular credentials'
Ashish Tripathi, TNN Jan 9, 2012, 06.39PM IST

LUCKNOW: A day after accusing Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) patriarch LK
Advani of double speak on the issue of corruption, Congres general
secretary Rahul Gandhi on Monday hit out at the 'secular credential'
of Samajwadi Party (SP) president Mulayam Singh Yadav by recalling how
for the sake of power, Yadav twice shook hands in the past with Kalyan
Singh, who was chief minister of BJP government in UP when Babri
mosque in Ayodhya was demolished and is also prime accused in the
demolition case.

Rahul also dared Mulayam to include in SP's manifesto that party will
give 18% reservation to Muslims if voted to power. "Mulayam says that
he is well wisher of Muslims but allied with Kalyan Singh. When the
Sachar committee proposed reservation for Muslims, he opposed. When
people asked him about quota for Muslim under other backward class
category, he remained silent. But when we provided reservation to
Muslims, Mulayam opposed and demanded 18% quota," he said at a public
meeting in Gorakhpur, during his campaign for upcoming UP elections.

"Mulayam should answer whether or not he will provide 18% quota to
Muslims in government jobs and government educational institutions, if
voted to power. Will he include this provision in his manifesto? We
promised and gave loan waiver to farmers. We promised and gave package
to weavers. We promised and gave package to Bundelkhand. We promised
and reservation to Muslims. We fought for farmers at Bhatta-Parsaul
and Tappal. Congress always fulfills its promises, whereas Opposition
only play caste and communal politics," Rahul said.

Replying to Opposition's charge that his visits to villages are an
election stunt, Rahul said that he visits poor not for votes but to
learn from them and feel their pain. "Mulayam and Mayawati do not go
to people because they don't feel for them anymore," he added. He also
said that there is nothing wrong in the people of UP. If provided
opportunity they can prove that they are far ahead of others, he said.
Further, he said "I have come here to transform UP. If voted to power,
Congress governments at the Centre and in the state will develop the
state in 10 years."

On Sunday, Rahul had said that on one hand LK Advani took out a rath
yatra across the country against corruption, on the other his party
has inducted expelled BSP leader Babu Singh Kushwaha, the most corrupt
minister in Mayawati regime.
