'Ambedkar ushered in social change'
Staff Correspondent

President of the zilla panchayat Katapady Shankar Poojary said on
Tuesday that the architect of Constitution B.R. Ambedkar was also a
social reformer.

He was speaking at the "parinirvana" (death anniversary) programme of
Dr. Ambedkar, organised here by the district administration,
departments of Social Welfare, Kannada and Culture, and Dalit
organisations.
Social reformer

Mr. Poojary said Dr. Ambedkar had ushered in social change in the
country by eradicating the social evil of untouchability. He was a
social reformer like Swami Vivekananda and Sri Narayana Guru. He
provided a Constitution which had been the guiding light of the
country.

. He belonged to all religions and castes. He was a humanist in true
sense. "His ideals will remain relevant for all times. He wanted all
people to live in harmony", Mr. Poojary said.

Manjunath Giliyaru, advocate, said that the condition of Dalits during
the pre-Independence days was pathetic and they were discriminated
against in every possible way.
Discrimination

Dr. Ambedkar too faced discrimination in his school. But he persevered
and got educated in the Bombay University and later in the University
of Columbia, he said.

Students should be taught about the life and thoughts of Dr. Ambedkar.

"Had there been no Dr. Ambedkar, the worst kind of human rights abuse
would have been committed on the Dalits. Dr. Ambedkar reformed the
Hindu community," he said.

President of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat Devadas Hebbar, Chief Executive
Officer of the zilla panchayat Prabhakar Sharma, Deputy Director of
the Department of Social Welfare Shivalinge Gowda, and Assistant
Director of Kannada and Culture H.S. Shivarudrappa were present.
