8 SC/ST students of MNNIT get laptops

ALLAHABAD: Taking a step ahead for the welfare of SC/ST students,
state's lone NIT-Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology on
Thursday provided laptops to selected eight meritorious students.
Giving this information, director of MNNIT, Prof P Chakrabarti said
that institute had decided to provide laptops under the financial
schemes operated by ministry of human resource development (MHRD) for
SC/ST students. Under the scheme, meritorious students on the basis of
academic performance were to be selected for the distribution of
laptops. As per the financial provisions for MHRD schemes, each
student was given a laptop worth Rs 45 thousand, said Chakrabarti.
He said that the step was the beginning of scores of measures being
initiated and mooted in the welfare of SC/ST candidates and students
fraternity in whole.
Prof Chakrabarti said that institute is also planning to raise funds
from various governmental agencies for launching many other schemes
and improving the research and academic infrastructure of institute.
"We have recognised the financial constraints which ultimately hampers
the growth of students from weaker sections. Institute would explore
all possibilities to minimise the burden of such students," he added
while interacting with the students after distributing the laptops.
