Villagers' agitation: SC/ST vice-chairman in city

FEROZEPUR: Dr. Raj Kumar Verka, Vice-Chairman of the National SC/ST
Commission visited Ferozepur today to analyse the reported cases of
beating up of tillers.
Several tillers, including women received injuries when police
resorted to lathi charge and firing to disperse the mob. They were
protesting against the land sharks who wanted to takeover hundred of
acres of land near the Indo-Pak border.
Later, the police rounded up nearly 50 villagers and a case under
various section of IPC including section 307 was registered against
eight of them.
Some influential persons, including bureaucrats had reportedly managed
to get the land in their names, thus snatching the land away from the
tillers.
This has sparked resentment among the villagers and they had been
fighting against the land sharks for quite sometime. Some of the
tillers were not having proprietary rights over the land alongside the
Sutlej. The state government had allotted some land to tillers in 1979
and then in 1989.
After his arrival, Dr Verka met the deputy commissioner, director
general of police and the SSP Ferozepur to get the official version of
the incident. Later, he also met the representatives of villagers and
the land owners separately.
