Grant for SC girls' uniform discriminatory: Teachers

CHANDIGARH: The move of Punjab government to provide uniforms to only
girls and students of SC/ST category in its schools seems to be
backfiring due to divisions it is reportedly creating among pupils.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Sikhya Vikas Manch, Punjab,
an association of government school teachers, stated that keeping out
general and BC category students from availing this facility was in
violation of Right to Education Act, which did not allow any kind of
discrimination along lines of caste, class or creed among students.
Association's leaders Jagjit Nauhra and Rajesh Kumar Dani point out
that in the present scenario, only a few students from the general or
BC categories were taking admission in the government schools mainly
because they could not afford the high fee charged by private schools.
"But, this kind of discrimination would only create unnecessary
complexes in their minds,'' Dani said, while pointing out that
teachers had to face the fury of and uncomfortable questions from
parents whose wards had been left out. They also said the grant of Rs
400 per child for uniform was inadequate given the inflation.
